Individual social responsibility (ISR)

The individual social responsibility includes the engagement of each person towards the community where he lives, which can be expressed as an interest towards what's happening in the community, as well as in the active participation in solving some of the local problems.

Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) is about an individual becoming responsiblein his/her actions that have an affect on communities outside his/her immediate circle. The immediate circle being family and friends. There can be an argument about also including family and friends, but it would be rather pertinent to include them as part of Individual Personal Responsibility.Under community we understand the village, the small town or the residential complex in the big city, where he/she lives. Each community lives its own life that undergoes a process of development all the time. And everyone of us could take part in that development in different ways, for example:

By taking part in cleaning of the street on which he lives

By taking part in organizing an event, connected with the history of the town or the village

By rendering social services to children without parents or elderly people

The individual social responsibility also could be expressed in making donations for social, cultural, or ecological causes. There are many ways of donating, as for example donating of goods or donating money through a bank account or online

Individual social responsibility is interlinked with corporate social responsibility. An individual (employee) has to contribute his best to fulfill the corporate social responsibility for its economic, social and environmental goals. Without employee contribution, a company cannot achieve its goals.

As an employee you can contribute environmentally to the company by switching off lights when not in use, by switching off computers when you are not working or by using shared cabs and planting trees. Your individual responsible actions will help the company to reduce energy bills and reduce its carbon footprints. As an individual youcan contribute to the companies social commitments by visiting the social camps organized by company social workers for the welfare of people who need your help in sanitary issues, health and education.

You can contribute to the economic development of the company by practicing ethics and moral values and loyalty to the company when it's a difficult situation. As an individual in the society you can help fellow individuals, care and love them only then one can say that one is a socially responsible citizen.

Coca-Cola enjoy

COCA-COLA: A CASE STUDY

Coca-Cola India being one of the largest beverage companies in India, realized that CSR had to be an integral part of its corporate agenda. According to the company, it was aware of the environmental, social, and economic impact caused by a business of its scale and therefore it had decided to implement a wide range of initiatives to improve the quality of life of its customers, the workforce, and society at large. However, the company came in for severe criticism from activists and environmental experts who charged it with depleting groundwater resources in the areas in which its bottling plants were located, thereby affecting the livelihood of poor farmers, dumping toxic and hazardous waste materials near its bottling facilities, and discharging waste water into the agricultural lands of farmers. Moreover, its allegedly unethical business practices in developing countries led to its becoming one of the most boycotted companies in the world.

Notwithstanding the criticisms, the company continued to champion various initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, restoring groundwater resources, going in for sustainable packaging and recycling, and serving the communities where it operated. Coca-Cola planned to become water neutral in India by 2009 as part of its global strategy of achieving water neutrality. However, criticism against the company refused to die down. Critics felt that Coca-Cola was spending millions of dollars to project a 'green' and 'environment-friendly' image of itself, while failing to make any change in its operations. They said this was an attempt at greenwashing as Coca-Cola's business practices in India had tarnished its brand image not only in India but also globally. The case discusses the likely challenges for Coca-Cola India as it prepares to implement its new CSR Strategy in the country.

We know that business is an economic activity, which is carried out on a regular basis to earn profit. However, we must have seen businessmen spending money on different aspects, which is not going to give them any profit straightaway. For example, we must have seen businessmen maintaining and developing gardens on streets and squares in the cities. Some businessmen engage themselves inresearch for improving the quality of products, some providing housing, transport, education and health care to their employees and their families. In some places businessmen provide free medical facility to poor patients. Sometimes they also sponsor games and sports at national as well as international.

WHAT IS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF BUSINESS?

In our daily life, we perform a number of activities, such as brushing our teeth, listening to our parents, showing respect to elders, obeying traffic rules on roads etc. Why do we perform these activities? Is it because we live in a family as well as a society and the members of the family and society want us to do all this.

They do several things for us and expect us to do several things for them. The expectations of the family or society becomes obligation for us, which we need to fulfill. For example, taking care of our parents or children, keeping the road clean by not littering etc. There are also obligations towards ourselves, which we need to fulfill. For example, eating our meals on time, getting the right amount of sleep etc. which keeps us fit and takes care of our health. Now we fulfill all these obligations by performing certain activities which are called our responsibilities. Any responsibility we have, particularly towards members of the society with whom we interact or towards the society in general is called social responsibility. This is true in case of business also.

Every business operates within a society. It uses the resources of the society and depends on the society for its functioning. This creates an obligation on the part of the business to look after the welfare of the society. So all the activities of the business should be such that they will not harm, rather they will protect and

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LAWS & HOW IT IS IMPLEMENTED IN INDIA

CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT, 1986

Industrial development in the field of manufactured goods has led to the influx of various consumer goods into the Indian market to cater to the needs of the consumers and a variety of services such as banking, financing, insurance, transport, housing construction, entertainment have been made available to the consumers.

In order to protect the consumers from exploitation and to save them from adulterated and substandard goods and deficient services. The Consumer Protection Act came into force on 15th April, 1986 and it applies to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Objects of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986

RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS DIFFERENT INTEREST GROUPS

After getting some idea about the concept and importance of social responsibility of business let us look into the various responsibilities that a business has towards different groups with whom it interacts. The business generally interacts with owners, investors, employees, suppliers, customers, competitors, government and society. They are called as interest groups because by each and every activity of business, the interest of these groups is affected directly or indirectly.

i. Responsibility towards owners

Owners are the persons who own the business. They contribute capital and bear the business risks. The primary responsibilities of business towards its owners are to:

a. Run the business efficiently.

b. Proper utilization of capital and other resources.

c. Growth and appreciation of capital.

d. Regular and fair return on capital invested.

ii. Responsibility towards investors

Investors are those who provide finance by way of investment in debentures, bonds, deposits etc. Banks, financial institutions, and investing public are all included in this category. The responsibilities of business towards its investors are:

a. Ensuring safety of their investment.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY Vs INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility seems to be the term of the day for an emerging corporate India. As corporate citizens, people seem to be more than willing to come up with innovative models for the up-liftment of society, using their own resources.

Starting from teaching the underprivileged children, to sharing resources with flood victims, to green planet fundamentals and to whatever else the organization feels it can give back to the society, everything is being done today.

So, now, a natural questions arises: Why were we not responsible towards the society, as individual citizens, earlier? Were all the people who pull up their socks now, and work towards the aim of corporate social responsibility not responsible as individuals earlier?

A few people who felt responsible earlier were contributing to the up-liftment of society using whatever little means they had. Some of them donated money to NGO's that helped underprivileged students, while others took classes over the weekends to help the NGO's in the field of education.

And that was not all, there were people who tried to help others by doing whatever little they could, in whatever form they could, whilethe rest continued to enjoy living a life of ease and comfort.

The important question, however, still remains: Why are we not individually responsible to live as socially responsible citizens? Do we always need a collective cause to pull us towards responsibility?

There's a proverb which says, "For a nation to prosper, each citizen has to be accountable to his task rather than communities being accountable to their task". Communities here refers to various groups of people, and in our current context we can consider organization, companies etc as communities.

So, to really take a country forward whatever we do in the name of the organization has to be carried out individually too.

The best place to start is home. If we accept the responsibility of being moral citizens in all the activities of our day to day life, it will automatically be reflected in our offices, and then on the nation as a whole. Working collectively for higher benefits to the society is commendable, but working individually towards the good of all is even better.

So, pause for a moment and think. How many of are ready to be individually responsible for the activities we carry out and be a socially responsible citizen, rather than have a collective pull through Corporate Social Responsibility.

RELATIONSHIP

Literally, the word relationship means the connection between two or more people or groups and their involvement with one another, especially the way they feel and behave about one another.

Relationship is a condition or fact of being related; connection or association. It can also be defined as a particular type of connection existing between people related to or having dealings with each other. Relationship with siblings is a blood relation. It is another name of trust. Some people take it serious and some do not bother. The mutual dealings between two or more people can also be defined as a relation. Relationships can be of many types i.e. mother and children relation, wife and husband relation and relation between siblingsor friends. The best way of keeping a relation long-lasting is trust.

DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIPS

COUPLES

A good relationship today is not one that just lasts but one that coexists with self-respect, individuality and the need to grow. For it to thrive successfully, marriage counselors and psychologists, also, stress the need for this kind of "space" within a couple's relationship. An individual in a marriage shouldn't be a repository of one's own needs and desires, in fact both the people involved should be totally committed to their relationship. They must be ready to take responsibility for themselves as well as the relationship.

PARENTING

One of life's greatest achievement is to grow and let your seeds grow. Nothing in life is more fulfilling than watching your children blossom.

More so when you have to nurture, educate and guide them towards a life most suitable to them. Millions of parents do it all the time, some with a lot of effort, some without a thought. So, what really is good parenting? Is it discipline, moral education, freedom to let your child be what he is? Or is it something more subtle, something that goes by the name of life's lessons? But it might be a good thing to remember that, no matter how eager or ambitious we are in shaping our children's lives, there is a limit to what we can accomplish. "You cannot make a plant grow in soil unsuited to it. A child teaches itself. But you can help it to go forward in its own way. What you can do is not of the positive nature, but of the negative. You can take away the obstacles, but knowledge comes out of its own nature. Loosen the soil a little, so that it may come out easily. Put a hedge round it; see that it is not killed by anything, and there your work stops. You cannot do anything else. The rest is a manifestation from within of its own nature."

BRINGING UP CHILDREN

Teach values such as honesty, integrity, patience and self-control gradually and steadily, that too by your own example.

Π Praise them openly and often, reprove secretly and seldom reprimand bad behavior.

Teach them self-esteem and self-confidence (something they'll carry for the rest of their lives).

Restrict television watching and recreation time. Keep a watch on your children's company.

Try to keep alcohol and drugs away from the house, or keep them in moderation.

Maintain a happy and loving home environment.

Give a lot of your time to your children, both quality and quantity.

Make humor and laughter a part of your relationship with children.

Allow children to grow and learn through the mistakes they make.

Hug and show feelings of love whenever possible.

Communicate gently but clearly and firmly.

SIBLINGS

We alternately love them and hate them, but one thing's for sure, what would we do without them? Our companions for life, our competitors, our confidantes, our rivals, our comrades-in-arms against the whole mad world. What would we do without them? No other bond in the world can beat siblings at sharing such a unique and complex love-hate relationship!

The true worth of having had brothers and/or sisters around while we were growing up never strikes us till we are way past our childhood.

The most important lesson we learn at that stage of our lives, is how to get along with individuals other than ourselves. That was also when we learnt to develop social valuessuch as cooperation, honesty, kindness, and tolerance.

Learning such important social skills usually takes a lot of time, but they are imbibed much faster while living with brothers and sisters. Children with siblings learn how to share and resolve conflicts quite easily. And with the right kind of guidance from parents, siblings also get a lot of practice in learning how to be cooperative, supportive, and nurturing others.

In other words, we probably turned out much better because we had that bullying older brother or the irritating younger sister it prepared us for all the important relationships we encountered later in life.

Tips for Managing Siblings

Let siblings express their feelings.

Try to comment only on the disagreeable behavior and avoid telling one child that a sibling is better at something.

Try to give each sibling according to his/her individual need.

Don't take sides in sibling fights. Instead, try to let the children work out differences on their own.

It takes time and persistence for you to learn new ways of treating your children and for them to learn new ways of getting along.

Don't give up.

FRIENDS

A friend is someone who walks in when the whole world walks out. Our friends are equity shares we earn in life. We continue to reap dividends on them throughout our lives. Yet today how many of us have shoulders to lean on outside our immediate familial relationships?

In a highly competitive and result oriented world, we seem to be drifting away from each other all the time. This is not to say that the world is short of amiable individuals, but rather that we have forgotten the art of maintaining positive camaraderie. In a mad rush to keep up with the fast changing pace of urban living, we fail to nurture and care for basic ties of love and warmth that binds us all together.

How to Make Relationships Work

Don't try too hard to convince the other person of your love. Love and trust yourself more. This will relax your love defenses and enable you to give yourself totally to a relationship.

Don't question the other person's love all the time.

Feel the oneness of the universe. Step beyond the 'me first conflicts that mar relationships. This would help you be complete within yourself.

Don't use your relationships to fulfill your expectations.

Know yourself. Analyze the cause of your reactions.

Acknowledge the other person as an individual. Grow and let grow.

In a conflicting relationship, check where you went wrong rather than where the other person failed. Listen to each other. Communication strengthens the foundation of a relationship.

Take the first step in working out a relationship without worrying about who is right. Don't depend on any person and don't let the other person depend on you.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A RELATIONSHIP?

Relationship is important for each person as you are seeking a good relationship with someone who takes care of you and understands you. In relationship every stage is important because it permits you to learn more about your partner and verify your feelings towards a relationship with them.

Forgive and Forget: In your relationship if any thing goes wrong then learn to forgive your partner. Please never show that you are right and also do not blame your partner. Try to forget the fault, truly forget. Try to look forward to a caring tomorrow.

Think is Long-Term: Everything important in your life such as your family member, your partner, your children and your friends. But how to maintain the long term relationship without hurting anybody. If you think that you have to maintain a long term relationship with anybody then engage yourself with them. Understand him or her and try to get involved with them.

Trust: Keeping a long term relationship is important for you but in your relationship trust plays an important role. Without the trust nobody can build a strong and good relationship.

Conflict Resolution: Whenever you make any kind of mistake it is difficult for you to say sorry. An argument creates a distance between you and your partner. Try resolving your conflict and it is important to find a resolution quickly.

Communication: Communication is an important key in every filed. Good communication helps you understand others and resolve your conflicts. Your good communication will show what you think about your partner.

Mutual Support: In a relationship partners need to be mutually supportive during tough times. One needs to share all his/her thoughts with the respective partner. Mutual support blossoms only when you believe in your partner. For mutual support you have to share every think with that partner. Try to show that you believed on him or her.

Listen and Understand: Try to understand your partner and listen to your partner and resolve your conflict because effective communication needs willingness on both sides to understand one another.

BUILDING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS

When it comes to a business, it is very important that you form relationships. You will need to create and keep relationships that will help you periodically throughout the life of your business. Building and keeping business relationships will help you succeed but damaging relationships or leaving poor and broken business relationships can hurt your business and your reputation.

Here are some important factors to keep in mind when building business relationships:

1. Remember that first impressions count.

2. Don't take the easy way over the right way.

3. Remember that it's not just what you do but how you do it.

4. Just like any relationship, there will be give and take.

5. Trust works both ways, even in a business relationship.

6. Communication is the key.

7. If things go sour, still keep it professional.

It's important that you remember first impressions count. When meeting your potential business associate for the first time, whether online or offline, you need to be sure you present yourself properly and professionally. Wear nice, clean clothing. Speak in a confident tone and be sure of yourself. Show that you are confident in your position but be honest. If presented with something you are not familiar with, admit it rather than lying when you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Don't try to take the easy way out of situations over the right way. Even if the right way is harder or may cause conflict, it will gain you more respect than trying to take the easy way. Remember that every relationship has give and take. Don't be the one always trying to take, take, and take. At the same time, be able to recognize if you are being taken advantage of and if you are the one always giving and never getting back in return.

Remember the importance of communication. If your business partner or client knows and understands your situation, they are much more likely to compromise or work with you. Avoiding phone calls, emails and other correspondence simply because you do not know what to say or are afraid of saying the wrong thing will leave your client wondering and possibly thinking the worst. Lies can also destroy the relationship and the reputation of your business. Just fess up to the truth and you will gain much more respect and likely keep your relationship. If the truth ends the relationship, at least your business will still have its pride and tact in placeRemember that while trust is important in a relationship, you both have to give a little when you make the decision to work together.

You cannot demand trust from someone when you have none to give of your own. There are ways to protect yourself, such as

If you find that your business relationship is not working out and you need to end it or the other party decides to end it, you should still keep it professional. Do you fall to insults or name-calling even if the other party does and try not to take things personally? Sometimes business partnerships don't work out or people do notwith contracts and legal agreements. Aside from these precautions, you have to trust the person a bit and hope that things turn out for the better. Unwarranted distrust leads to bitterness and skepticism which can harm a business relationship.

mesh well together. This does not necessarily mean that you are a bad person.

Remember that everyone is human, no matter how perfect they may seem from the exterior. Mistakes happen and unforeseen events occur. Try to be understanding and treat people the same way you want to be treated.

A CASE STUDY

A man feared his wife wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem.

The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

Here's what you do," said the Doctor, "stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response." That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens." Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?"

No response..

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away.. "Honey, what's for dinner?"

Again there is no response..

So he walks right up behind her... "Honey, what's for dinner?" "Bob, I am saying it for the fifth time that I am cooking chicken!"

MORAL: Rather than finding faults in others, we have to work on ourselves, and that is how relationships are made.. giving space and acceptance to yourself and others around you.
